Hate And Hysteria Essays - Communism In The United States
Hate And Hysteria Essays - Communism In The United States Hate and hysteria Hate and hysteria Author Murray Levin (1977) wrote, AMcCarthyism, in a capitalist society, produces extremism, intolerance, instability, and large scale repression (p.216). He also says that AThe promoters of mass politics raise the question of justice and attempt to play upon generalized resentments steaming from deeper layers of personality. The politics of mass society does not focus on group [emailprotected] The purpose of these politics is the defense of the ultimate truth. This "Red scare" started in the twenties and in one form or another lasted till well after World War 2 was over. McCarthyism was not the work of psychotics and paranoids. This political hysteria was a mixture of American conservatism, pluralism, anti-radicalism, racism, and nativism. . In addition, this passionate form of nationalism was perceived by most Americans as a perfectly sensible and American way to defend the American way of life against danger. Louis Hartz (1956) said Athe Red scare was a product of the American people manipulating themselves as well as the American people responding to [emailprotected] According to the popular opinion, Robert Murray warned that communist were to come and overthrow our form of government and business enterprises. He said that communism would do five things. " First, destroy property rights. Second, take away all personal initiative in industrial activities. Third, abolish civil government and the political state. Fourth, destroy the church and religious institutions. Finally, abandon family relations. Many who actively promoted the hysteria genuinely believed in conspiracy, consider themselves as patriots, and utilized the hysteria for private political and economic gain that they usually hid. "Joe McCarthy was one of the top investigators of communism along with Edgar Hoover, who was at that time a director of the FBI."(the hunt began) McCarthy got all his suspects from Hoover; many times they made false accusations to help their cause. They were the at the root of hysteria during the 40's and 50's. McCarthyism has been defined as political murder; many innocent people were hung, stabbed, and imprisoned for false accusations where evidence was insufficient. By accusing people of being "Red" McCarthy and Hoover ignored several amendments that given freedoms of United States citizens. First, he broke the first amendment that says people have the right to religion, speech, assembly and politics. For example, in Waterbury, Connecticut a salesman was sentenced to six months in jail for having remarked to a customer that Lenin was "brainiest" or "one of the brainiest" political leaders in the world. In 1919 a citizen of Indiana, in a fit of rage, shot and killed an alien who yelled "to hell with the United States"; the jury deliberated for two minutes before acquitting the killer.(Newman) McCarthy also ignored the fifth amendment that speaks against self incrimination and talks of how due process. In addition McCarthy saw past the eighth and ninth amendment. Amendment eight says that people could not be given excessive bail or fines and were not to be submitted to cruel and unusual punishments. Amendment nine talks of the rights retained by the people. This amendment specifically says "The enumeration in the constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. In fact, many people produced anti-Soviet propaganda, one was called "A Guide to anti-Communist action" and another example was called "Is This Tomorrow". Twenty eight states passed laws banning the display of red flags. In addition, Hollywood responded to this hysteria by creating many films portraying Russians as bad guys. The U.S. Steel Corporation, and it's president, Judge Gary, attempted to break a strike by creating the impression that it had little to do with the demands for wages and hours but was instead a communist conspiracy and part of a larger plan to hurt American industry and help the Bolshevik revolution. U.S. Steel was also one of the many corporations that used large numbers of private detectives as labor spies. This succeeded and played a major role in escalating national anti-radical hysteria. This labor spy would infiltrate unions, urge laborers not to join unions, and promote anti-strike activities. These Astrike [emailprotected] are detecting unions one day, and Bolshevism the next. At one time U.S. steel used the

Charlemagne and the Battle of Roncevaux Pass
Charlemagne and the Battle of Roncevaux Pass Conflict: The Battle of Roncevaux Pass was part of Charlemagnes Iberian campaign of 778. Date: The Basque ambush at Roncevaux Pass is believed to have taken place on August 15, 778. Armies Commanders: Franks CharlemagneUnknown (large army) Basques Unknown (possibly Lupo II of Gascony)Unknown (guerilla raiding party) Battle Summary: Following a meeting of his court at Paderborn in 777, Charlemagne was enticed into invading northern Spain by Sulaiman Ibn Yakzan Ibn al-Arabi, wali of Barcelona and Girona. This was further encouraged by al-Arabis promise that the Upper March of Al Andalus would surrender quickly the Frankish army. Advancing south, Charlemagne entered Spain with two armies, one moving through the Pyrenees and another to the east passing through Catalonia. Traveling with the western army, Charlemagne quickly captured Pamplona and then proceeded on to the Upper March of Al Andalus capital, Zaragoza. Charlemagne arrived at Zaragoza expecting to find the citys governor, Hussain Ibn Yahya al Ansari, friendly to the Frankish cause. This proved not to be case as al Ansari refused to yield the city. Facing a hostile city and not finding the country to be as hospitable as al-Arabi had promised, Charlemagne entered into negotiations with al Ansari. In return for the Franks departure, Charlemagne was given a large sum of gold as well as several prisoners. While not ideal, this solution was acceptable as news had reached Charlemagne that Saxony was in revolt and he was needed to the north. Retracing its steps, Charlemagnes army marched back to Pamplona. While there, Charlemagne ordered the citys walls pulled down to prevent it from being used as a base for attacking his empire. This, along with his harsh treatment of the Basque people, turned the local inhabitants against him. On the evening of Saturday August 15, 778, while marching through Roncevaux Pass in the Pyrenees a large guerilla force of Basques sprung an ambush on the Frankish rearguard. Using their knowledge of the terrain, they decimated the Franks, plundered the baggage trains, and captured much of the gold received at Zaragoza. The soldiers of the rearguard fought valiantly, allowing the remainder of the army to escape. Among the casualties were several of Charlemagnes most important knights including Egginhard (Mayor of the Palace), Anselmus (Palatine Count), and Roland (Prefect of the March of Brittany). Aftermath Impact: Though defeated in 778, Charlemagnes armies returned to Spain in the 780s and fought there until his death, slowly extending Frankish control south. From the captured territory, Charlemagne created the Marca Hispanica to serve as a buffer province between his empire and the Muslims to the south. The Battle of Roncevaux Pass is also remembered as the inspiration for one of the oldest known works of French literature, the Song of Roland.

The Current Position of Starbucks Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
The Current Position of Starbucks - Essay Example Though profit maximization, sales maximization makes the backbone of every companyââ¬â¢s objective, Starbucks have over insisted on this and failed to maximize its quality management and customer needs. The replacement of comfy seats with stands, stylish coffee cups with general cups, stuffy environments and supply of sandwiches whose smell overpowered the sweet scent of brewed coffee is also another strategy that led to the drastic decline of the companyââ¬â¢s sales. This shows a complete diversion of the companyââ¬â¢s mission and goal. Waitresses and waiters have also been overburdened; they no longer appreciate their work. They feel that the goal they were working hard to achieve and sustain has suddenly changed (Mulcaster, 2009). Brewing of coffee was the major idea behind Starbucks formation. However this idea has changed to automatic making of coffee that customers complain about. The quality of coffee is not felt anymore and so is the social effect of the stores. The employeesââ¬â¢ attachment with the customers has reduced due to the tall coffee making machines that destruct the customers view when coffee is made (Mintzberg et al., 2003). ...ategy to help them cope up with the food crisis problems, such as decreasing its prices, or even changing the type of cups to small ones that were affordable just like its competitors deed. Nonetheless, this company did not take into concern efforts made by its competitors. Many stores came up with new strategies to combat Starbuckââ¬â¢s increased sales. The strategy then employed by this company was to open even more stores in the US. However they failed to carry along their distinctive character with them, such as brewing coffee, presence of comfy seats, and ensuring that the sweet aroma of coffee was still intact. As a result the decline of its shares in the stock exchange was inevitable. This is because there is no one who would like to be associated with a declining firm which translates to low di vidends due to the low profits and sales realized. Though Starbucks Company still has the capabilities and resources that can help it to still lead in the coffee world, the environment in which it is running its business is too tight. First the economy has changed. Food prices have hiked, meaning that the disposable income of the consumers is low. They will therefore not opt to take expensive coffee. In addition, its competitors are doing all they can to make sure that they also increase their sales and also penetrate the market just as Starbucks is doing. They are thus growing at the same level. The companyââ¬â¢s employees are also getting tired of the introduction of new products. Not that it is wrong, but because their opinion is not taken into concern. They feel that they are not part of the company anymore. However, Starbuck Company can be able to reinstate itself once more and be on the lead in coffee roasting and retailing.

The significance of cross-cultural negotiation skills for the success Essay
The significance of cross-cultural negotiation skills for the success of international mergers and alliances - Essay Example This is where the term ââ¬â¢cross-culturalââ¬â¢ acquires significance in discussing negotiating skills essential for the success of international mergers and more specifically for success in acquisitions and alliances. More often than not, mergers and acquisitions are types of corporate businesses which amalgamate to form one single legal entity. The word alliance may cover activities like joint ventures, technology sharing agreements, and (seemingly in danger of violating anti-trust laws by price fixing) cartels, but not necessarily forming a single legal entity. Mergers and acquisitions among business firms have occurred within state boundaries before they became an international phenomenon. It perhaps speaks volumes for the lack of negotiating skills by one party or the other, when it is reported that 60 - 70 percent of M&As failed to deliver on what had been expected financially, as the outcome of the liaison. Less than a fifth of international M&As are said to create added value to the resulting organization. At the least, domestic mergers and acquisitions can expect shared traditions, regulatory laws, and custom and practice, which presumably make it easier for two or more parties to agree on common business aims and work towards achieving them.

DoCoMo Essay Example for Free
DoCoMo Essay DoCoMoââ¬â¢s i-mode concept was a fresh air in the almost stagnant telecommunications market of Japan. They were ingenious enough to target the right market base along with exactly the right offerings. First of all, i-mode had the capability to keep its users connected to the internet all the time, everywhere. Apart from this, the internet services were content providers. Even though this somehow did limit the amount of websites a user can visit, the content websites were chosen in such a way as to fulfill the requirements of the target market. This was a unique way of connecting people to the internet and to each other which took everyone by storm. Young teens and adults were the main target market ââ¬â a market that had a high priority to stay connected with friends and groups but didnââ¬â¢t have the proper means to. The cheapest way of being connected was the internet and the target market mostly didnââ¬â¢t even own PCââ¬â¢s or didnââ¬â¢t have the time or capacity to afford the more mobile versions of a PC (PDAââ¬â¢s, Laptops etc. ). This created a window of opportunity for DoCoMoââ¬â¢s i-mode in the sense that it provided users with a way to connect with each other without the hassle and expenses associated with owning a laptop or a PC. The target market being adults in 1999 had grown up by 2002. Competitors followed and gave i-mode a hard time as well. With the WAP standard becoming faster and cheaper, the new generation, which preferred media content more over simple text based content was switching to providers who were providing higher data speeds and more elaborate options such as video calls, Multi media messaging etc. ence DoCoMoââ¬â¢s main customer base was changing due to the advancement of time and change in preferences. Customers were no more interested in just ââ¬Ëservicesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëfluffââ¬â¢ as i-mode started. They wanted more. Apart from a shifting market, i-mode was also facing other challenges. First of all, the up coming markets usage rate was a lot less than the previous o nes. This meant lesser revenue per user. Secondly, competition was increasing by the day. Even though i-mode was still the leader with 60% market share, firms like KDDI and J-Phone had come up with more exciting packages, better offers and better handsets with market shares at (and growing) 24% and 17% respectively. Policy changes at the national level too were forcing i-mode to make changes that were estranging it form its content providers and resulting in lesser profits due to the new, lesser monthly charges that were to go into effect soon. The marketing techniques used in the past by i-mode were effective in capturing their target market. Keeping in mind the changing market conditions of the present, those techniques will not work as effectively anymore. The new market needs something better. The reason competitors are speeding ahead is because the new services and cell phone models they have to offer. First of all i-mode will need to launch better phones and services that come with things like internet connectivity as standard rather than an exclusive service. Current advancements have ensured that internet connectivity is not an exclusive offer anymore, everyone is providing it. I-mode will have to yet again identify something unique. Marketing techniques again will have to be designed according to that new product offering. Furthermore, marketing techniques should not exclusively just target the youth. The reason being that the market matures too quickly (goes beyond the age bracket of youngsters ââ¬â adult ages have a bigger cohort) and does not have the spending power that adults have either. Hence the marketing techniques and offering should be tailored to account for these issues as well. I-mode became popular in Japan but it cannot be replicated in other countries due to various reasons. The foremost reason being the paradigms dominant in other countries. Some markets prefer voice calls over text messaging and others prefer text messaging instead. Content providers in other markets do not see i-modes business model as a profitable opportunity either hence it is tough to implement the same structure where there are issues regarding the markets preferences as well as the suppliers. Hence, i-mode will have to tailor their product offering and marketing techniques according to the country they are entering. This is currently an issue that DoCoMo realizes and will hopefully tailor itself accordingly in order to enter new international markets.

Love in the Time of Cholera Essay -- essays research papers
As the title suggests, the novel Love in the Time of Cholera by Garcia Marquez deals with practical and nostalgic love. The author has the ability of portraying excellent determination in his eagerness to develop his stylistic range. Supporting almost a mythical quality grounded with an air of daily gossip, the novel includes descriptions of love which drift between unearthly beauty and terror. Love in the Time of Cholera is a mixture of two contrasting factors: the purity of love, and the way love is personified in everyday life. Love in the Time of Cholera is seen almost as an anatomy of love. The novel's most original descriptions, both in an anatomical and a creative sense, could be compared to the development from seed to flower in the progression of love out of disrespectful neighborhoods of "convenience.'' Most of the meaningless attacks of day to day life, shared by two people who have bonded with each other - all the repulsive smells, undignified tasks and boring routines; all the unspoken bitterness; all the gloomy emphasis on unlived possibilities - are unmercifully described. Love's strength to grow in such dark circumstances, to rise above life's evil forces and still remain slightly unharmed, and to even stay sacred, is perhaps the most expertly portrayed theme in the novel. Just as the superior power of spiritual love may overcome the seriousness of level-headedness, so too it may overwhelm passionate strength, transforming Florentino's nostalgia of love ...

Catawba: Variable Cost and Differential Cost Approach
Is the company correct in its decision of not manufacturing standard model compressors on Sundays? Why? Show your calculations. Decision making should be based on change of RELEVANT items ONLY. The companyââ¬â¢s calculation is WRONG, as it takes into concern of irrelevant fixed cost. By double-counting depreciation, other Mfg. overheads, SG&A in Sundayââ¬â¢s cost; it distorts the P&L sheet. To correctly show cost structure for decision making, there are two different approaches, yet each should reach same conclusion. Approach 1: Differential Cost ApproachAs suggested in case, by producing 4 unites on Sunday, total depreciation, total Mfg. overhead and SG&A will not change. Thus, we should only look into accounts that will change out of producing activities on Sunday. Table below shows the result of Contribution Margin computation. As illustrated in the table, producing on Sunday will bring $ 2,600 contribution margin per unit and thus company should manufacture. Approach 2: Com prehensive Income Approach. Based on P&L sheet we can calculate total fixed cost for one week manufacturing Depreciation=$ 497? 4= $11,928 Mfg. Overhead=$177? 24=$4,248 Sales=$1,519? 20+$1,769? 4=$ 37,456 G&A=$ 607? 20+$ 707? 4= $14,968 Then we construct weekly income statement of two scenarios As suggested in table, by producing in Sunday, company can realize $ 10,400 profit every week, same as by using Differential Cost Approach. Total Increasing Profit=Contribution Margin? unit=$ 2,600? 4=$ 10,400 Suppose Marge McPhee decides to manufacture 10 light weight compressors each week during weekdays for 8 weeks only and sell them at a price of $8,000.Compared to only producing standard compressors, do you support this decision? Why? Show your calculations to support your argument. We use differential cost approach to make decision. Since factory is producing at full-capacity and company cannot force the 3rd shift, nor recruit more labor, the direct labor hour is the constrain factor. L ight compressor requires 62. 5 DLH and standard compressor requires 100 DLH, in other words, produce 1 light compressor can produce 62. 5/100=0. 25 standard compressor and 10 light compressors => 6. 25 standard compressors. Based on information, we can construct the comparison table between two scenarios. As illustrated by table, producing 10 light compressors instead of 6. 25 standard compressors for ONLT 8 weeks will generate $ 182,000 more contribution margin. However, to realize this amount of margin Catawba need to invest $ 218,000 on additional jigs, sensors and soft wares. Thus, company should NOT produce light compressor.
